The National Gallery of Art is organizing the 2009 edition of the National Visual Art Competition, the second in the series. The aim is to discover and consolidate on the artistic genius of Nigerian pupils, students and professional artists to express themselves in various art forms and also to assist them develop and enhance their skills and creative abilities. The theme for this year’s competition “Rebranding Nigeria through Visual Art” is essentially chosen to allow a major segment of Nigerians “tell their story” through works of art. These works will provide information which we hope will form part of the references for the re-branding Nigeria work and practice; a strategy for appreciating ourselves and our country, which will put us in a position that will positively present us to the outside world. The sub themes includes:- a. Nigeria: A good nation. b. Seven point agenda and the visual art. c. Visual Art: Our wealth, our strength. d. Visual Art: A Means of effective communication. Participants are at liberty to choose any of the sub themes to produce their works.

The competition is open to students (primary, secondary and tertiary institutions) and professional artists, including those that participated in the 2008 edition.

The prizes for the different categories are as follows:-

a. Professional 1st position N200, 000 2nd position N150, 000 3rd position N100, 000

b. Tertiary 1st position N120, 000 2nd position N90, 000 3rd position N70’000

c. Primary/Secondary 1st position N90, 000 2nd position N70, 000 3RD Position N60, 000
