Mr. Abdullahi Muku endorses NAFEST and AFAC 2011.

The 35th Chief Executives of Culture of the Federation Meeting held at the Imo Concorde Hotel, Owerri, Imo State from 28th – 31st March 2011. The theme for this year’s meeting was: “Culture As A Tool For Sustainable Development”. The meeting which was convened by the National Council for Arts and Culture (NCAC); an agency of the Federal Ministry of Tourism, Culture & National Orientation had in attendance, the Director for Culture of the Ministry: Mr. George Ufot; Dr. Barclays Ayakoroma, the Executive Secretary of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation (NICO); Mr. Martins Adaji, the Artistic Director of the National Troupe of Nigeria (NTN); Mr. Goleng representing the Director/Chief Executive of the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC); and State Commissioners for arts and culture. It was a forum to review and fine-tune strategies for implementing government cultural policies as well as set an agenda for moving the culture sector forward.

The Executive Director / Chief Executive Officer of the NCAC: Mr. M. M. Maidugu used the occasion to inform the august body of the proposed National Festival for Arts & Culture (NAFEST) 2011 and the African Arts and Crafts Expo (AFAC) 2011. While NAFEST 2011 is scheduled to hold in the last quarter of 2011, AfAC 2011 has been fixed for 16th – 31st May, 2011 to coincide with activities of the Presidential swearing-in ceremony.

Also at the event, Mr. M. M. Maidugu, the Executive Director of the NCAC, on behalf of the distinguished gathering congratulated Mr. Abdullahi Muku on the confirmation of his appointment as Director General of the NGA by President GoodLuck Jonathan.

Mr. Abdullahi Muku, the Director-General of the National Gallery of Art (NGA) is desirous of repositioning the visual arts subsector; and is supportive of all programmes and events aimed at promoting and sustaining Nigeria’s arts and culture.

Mr. Muku Abdullahi was unavoidably absent due to prior official engagement; but was ably represented by Mr. Titus Akusu, the Director, Curatorial Services Department of the NGA .
