Sports & Culture: NGA, Nigeria exhibits in the Nigerian Village @ South Africa 2010 FIFA World Cup

THEME: "Culture Defines Us; Football Unites"

INTRODUCTION

The beauty of culture is in its variety, which distinctively defines us. This variety often refers to “as the spice of life” features prominently in Nigerian culture. It richness reflects in abundance in the contemporary Nigerian visual arts.
These qualities coupled with universal recognition have made the Nigerian art the cynosure of the people most especially the art enthusiasts wherever it is exhibited.
Therefore, the invitation extended to the National Gallery of Art, Nigeria, to participate and show -case the country's art treasures in the South Africa 2010 world cup is most welcome. The Soccer Fiesta which is the number one world sport  has provided an opportunity for National Gallery of Art to showcase our rich diverse culture in art form.
To some inquisitive mind, what is the business of art in a football fiesta? The answer is not far fetched, the visual arts of any country is the heart- beat of her culture and tourism. Interestingly, it has become a maxim that no matter how a people differs in their socio-political opinions, there is a meeting point. FOOTBALL has become the product of unity and the most popular sport in the universe.
Obviously, anytime there is a football match, every citizen would forget their differences and team-up to support their darling National team. This is applicable in most parts of the world. It is always an interesting and joyous moment most especially when the National team becomes victorious.
World Cup fiesta has become an important point of convergence for people from various contingents. This provides an opportunity for exchange of material culture in form of souvenirs etc. It is also an avenue for networking to further advance socio-cultural and economic relationships.
As we savour football artistry, let us have it at the back of our mind that while culture defines us as individual countries, FOOTBALL unites us as a global family.
I  wish the SUPER EAGLES a successful outing.
